Marco Biagi was a jourist who most felt the need to tie theoretical studies to the practical needs of the labor market. There is a profound continuity between his scientific publications and his work in the service of institutions. In both, he turned his attention to the most disadvantaged workers and those most neglected by labor law. Biagi firmly believed that there was a need to identify an essential core of protections to be guaranteed for all types of labor relations, extending them beyond salaried work and admitting that some protections could be waived with the involvement of the social partners. In this spirit, Biagi also collaborated with policymakers and he was the author of one of the last major reforms of the italian labor market with a law that bears his name ("Biagi Law" in 2003) and that cost him his life.
